If you search for “Embroidery Thread” on Amazon, these are the two titans. Simthread and Embroidex both offer massive color sets for under $40. Are they the same? Absolutely not.

Strength Test

In a hurry? Jump to our recommended thread picks ↓

Thread strength shows up most clearly at high speed, around 800 stitches per minute.

  • Embroidex: Broke 3 times in 10,000 stitches.
  • Simthread: Broke 0 times.

Winner: Simthread. It is noticeably stronger and has a tighter twist.

Sheen and Finish

Embroidex has a slightly more “plastic” look. Simthread has a higher sheen that mimics rayon (even though it is polyester). Simthread’s spools also have a better “snap” base to keep thread tidy.

Compatibility

Simthread is specifically marketed as “Brother Compatible” and uses the correct numbering system (corresponding to Brother colors). This makes mapping colors in your software much easier.

Conclusion

Spend the extra $5 and get Simthread. It is the closest you can get to premium brands like Madeira without paying the premium price.

60wt Bobbin Thread
Finer than your top thread by design, so it sits flat underneath and keeps the back of the design from bulking up.

Prewound Bobbins
Wound tighter and more evenly than most home machines manage. Check your machine takes Style L or Style M before buying.
