The backing material for embroidery patches and finished embroidered items affects the finished product’s stiffness, durability, appearance, sewing ease, and cost. Whether you are making embroidered patches for sale, creating embroidered badges, or producing ITH finished items, choosing the right backing affects every aspect of the final product’s quality and how it holds up in use. This guide compares the most common backing materials to help you choose the right one for each application.
Felt
Felt is the most accessible and easiest-to-use backing material for embroidery patches. It is inexpensive, available in a wide range of colors, soft enough to work with easily, and provides adequate support for most standard embroidery designs. Felt’s main limitations are its tendency to stretch slightly under tension (which can cause minor distortion in dense fills) and its inferior durability compared to woven materials. For decorative patches that will not experience heavy use or repeated washing, felt is a perfectly acceptable choice. For patches on workwear or items that will be used hard, woven backing materials are more durable.
Twill
Twill fabric is the standard backing material for iron-on and professional embroidery patches. Its woven structure provides better dimensional stability than felt under embroidery tension, holds iron-on adhesive backing more reliably, and has better durability for heavy use and washing. Twill is slightly harder to cut cleanly than felt but produces a more professional-looking patch edge. For patches intended for uniform applications, team patches, or any patches where longevity matters, twill is the better choice.
Canvas
Canvas backing is used for patches requiring maximum durability and rigidity, particularly military and law enforcement patches, patches for heavy outerwear, and applications where the patch needs to maintain its shape under significant mechanical stress. Canvas is stiffer than twill, making it slightly harder to work with but significantly more durable in demanding applications. The added rigidity of canvas backing also means canvas-backed patches do not conform as easily to curved surfaces as twill or felt patches.
Specialty Backing Options
