Sulky Thread Review 2026: Rayon 40, Poly 40, and Poly Lite Tested
About Sulky Thread
Sulky is an American thread brand with a strong following among quilters, machine embroiderers, and home sewists. This review focuses on their three most commonly purchased machine embroidery lines: Rayon 40, Poly 40, and Poly Lite (60-weight).
Sulky Rayon 40
Sulky Rayon 40 is a high-sheen rayon thread that produces beautiful results for decorative embroidery where visual impact and color vibrancy are the priority. Color rendering on white cotton is excellent. The trade-off is reduced durability compared to polyester. Break rate in high-speed production was noticeably higher, particularly on machines running above 900 SPM. Colorfastness showed slight fading after 15 wash cycles at 40 degrees C, acceptable for decorative applications but not ideal for workwear.
Sulky Poly 40
The Poly 40 is Sulky’s standard production polyester and performs well as a general-purpose embroidery thread. Break rate across multiple machines was low, color consistency from spool to spool was good, and the thread feeds through the machine path cleanly. Compared to Isacord or Madeira Polyneon, the Poly 40 is competitive and is often available at a lower price point, making it a reasonable choice for cost-sensitive production environments.
Sulky Poly Lite (60-Weight)
The Poly Lite is a 60-weight thread for finer applications: small text, lightweight fabrics, and projects where thread bulk needs minimizing. In testing on text at 7mm letter height, the Poly Lite produced cleaner, tighter letterforms than 40-weight thread at identical settings. This is a specialist thread, not an everyday substitute for 40-weight.
Overall Verdict
Sulky is a reliable, accessible thread brand that performs well across its range. For production polyester work, the Poly 40 is a solid mid-tier choice. The Rayon 40 is among the better rayon options for decorative and heirloom work where sheen matters. The Poly Lite is a useful specialist thread for small text and fine work.
