Digitizing a logo for embroidery means converting the visual elements of a logo — shapes, text, fill areas, and outlines — into a precise stitch file that an embroidery machine can execute. Unlike printing or cutting, where the machine directly reproduces the artwork, embroidery requires every element of the design to be explicitly defined as a specific stitch type (satin, fill, running, etc.), with stitch direction, density, sequence, and underlay all specified. This is why auto-digitizing tools that claim to convert an image to embroidery with one click rarely produce professional results — true quality digitizing requires manual decisions at every stage.
Step 1: Prepare Your Artwork
Start with the highest resolution version of the logo available. Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) are ideal because they scale without loss of sharpness. If only a raster image (JPEG, PNG) is available, use an image at least 300 DPI at the size you will digitize. Clean the artwork before importing — remove gradients, drop shadows, and effects that cannot be replicated in embroidery. Simplify highly detailed elements to what can realistically be stitched at the target size.
Step 2: Import and Size the Design
Import the artwork into your digitizing software (Hatch, Wilcom, Embrilliance, or similar). Set the design dimensions to the actual size it will be embroidered. This is critical — design decisions about stitch type and density are size-dependent. What works at 4 inches may not work at 2 inches. If you will be stitching the logo at multiple sizes, you may need separate digitized files for each size range.
Step 3: Assign Stitch Types to Each Element
The main decision for each design element is the stitch type: running stitch for outlines and fine lines, satin stitch for fills with a defined border orientation (text characters, narrow shapes), and fill stitch (also called flat stitch or tatami stitch) for larger filled areas where satin stitch would be too long and prone to snagging. Most logos use a combination of fill for large areas and satin for borders and lettering.
Step 4: Set Underlay and Density
Underlay is the foundation layer of stitches that runs before the main fill, stabilizing the fabric and providing a base for the top stitches to lock into. For most fill areas, a zigzag or grid underlay is appropriate. For satin stitches, a center-run underlay is standard. Stitch density for fills is typically 0.4-0.5mm between rows for standard fabrics. For small designs on smooth fabrics, increase density slightly (0.35mm). For thick fabrics or heavy garments, reduce density slightly (0.5-0.55mm).
Step 5: Set Color Sequence and Test
Arrange the color sequence so that each color layer builds logically on the previous one. Generally, stitch lighter colors before darker colors and background fills before foreground elements. Before stitching on a final garment, always stitch a test sample on the same type of fabric you will be using for production. Check for density issues, color coverage, and registration accuracy before committing to a full run.
